Richmond
upon Thames Performing Arts Festival
was founded in 1929 as the Twickenham & Richmond Musical
Festival. There were no annual Festivals during the 2nd
World War, so Festival 2012 is the 78th in a
series which has been unbroken since then. THE FESTIVAL
AIMS TO BE SELF SUPPORTING – WE RECEIVE NO NATIONAL OR
COUNCIL GRANTS. We do however receive much valued support
from Richmond Parish Lands Charity, Hampton Fuel Allotment
Charity, our Patrons and Advertisers. Without these it
would be impossible for the Festival to exist in its present
form but with ever increasing costs for the hire of venues
and adjudicators fees, the Festival committee have
reluctantly decided that some entry and admission fees must
be raised in 2012. We do hope that these small increases
will not deter anyone from taking part in ….
The
Festival Experience
Richmond upon Thames Performing Arts Festival
is open to any amateur performer of any age in the arts of
music, dance and speech. In order to engender the spirit of
Festival, all participants are supported equally with mutual
respect and without prejudice.
Although Richmond is primarily a competitive
Festival the purpose is educational. Festivals are
not examinations – they are all about performance
in a supportive, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Richmond Festival provides:
§
A constructive written and verbal appraisal
of performances by an experienced and sympathetic
professional in the chosen field, who motivates and
encourages people of all ages to improve their performance
threshold.
§
Certificates and a category assessment as an
indication of relative achievement
§
The opportunity to listen to and see others
and gain knowledge from their performance and the assessment
of it. We seek not only to create the next generation of
performers but also new, informed audiences.
§
The opportunity to gain confidence and
develop performance technique, as Festivals provide a goal
to aim for and a focus for practice.
§
The opportunity to compete for substantial
cash bursaries to help with future training in the Richmond
upon Thames Young Pianist, Young Singer, Young
Instrumentalist, Young Performer (Speech & Drama) and Young
Dancer of the Year competitions and the chance to win other
cash prizes, medals and trophies.
§
The Festival complements work done by schools
and other organisations and is recognised for some course
work for GCSE and A level examinations and gives an
opportunity for independent assessment of work in progress.
The Dance Festival is a qualifying heat for
the biennial All England Dance competition
